Little-known Secrets about the SAT Prep Industry

Getting accepted into a great school, getting a rock solid education, landing a dream job…

For many students, it all starts with the SAT. And there are a lot of SAT preparatory businesses lining up to help these students.

I talk with a lot of SAT tutors and instructors in different parts of the country. And I’ve learned some insider secrets that really surprised me, and I’d like to share them with you.

Truth be told, you could save hundreds, even thousands, of dollars.

Little-known Secrets about the SAT Prep Industry

There are hundreds of companies out there that offer classroom-style SAT preparation classes. As such, each has a teacher and a set number of hours for class – usually 5 to 7 hours per test section.

No surprise there. But here’s what the insiders in the SAT prep business don’t want you to know…

First, there often isn’t a limit to these class sizes… meaning, as many kids as possible are crammed into one room with only one teacher.

Second, it’s very rare that a student actually needs 5 to 7 hours of prep per SAT section. When done right, it only takes 3 hours to effectively and thoroughly teach each section.

The rest of that time is spent with “filler” material. Not only are parents sometimes misled into believing all this time is necessary to teach SAT prep, they pay a premium price for all that time.

Hundreds – sometimes thousands – of dollars are wasted by parents.

That’s why it is so important to separate the bad from the good…

As I mentioned earlier, so much is on the line when students take this test. And it’s vital for students to be prepared to take it.

Here are a few ways to find the better SAT prep courses from the hundreds out there…

  • What is the track record?   How many students have improved on their SAT scores after taking the course?  If  this information isn’t provided, that should be a warning sign.
  • How efficient is the time spent in the classroom?  How much of the content is “filler” or wasted class time?
  • How convenient and flexible is the SAT prep course?  Many courses now run obscurely timed class schedules that make it very difficult to make.  Other classes won’t even give you a make-up class if you miss. Some of the very best SAT prep courses are self-study, and require no class time whatsoever.

Also, don’t be shy to ask SAT prep providers some tough questions. After all, you’re shelling out a lot of money for a very important cause.

Ask providers how courses are taught and by whom.

Ask them about class size limits. Ask them about results – how much better do students do on their SAT after taking their prep course

One last thing:  Ask the company if they offer a guarantee.

You may find that the on-line test prep is the most efficient and economical way to study for your tests.

Not only do on-line test prep programs offer the advantage of self-timed study, they tackle the content in a straight-forward way; the student is able to see at the moment what questions they are missing and which ones require additional study time.

New tests can then be created based on tough material to really target their individual weaknesses and help to improve their overall score.

What I’ve shared with you today is only the first part to finding the best SAT prep course…

The second step is just as important as the first…

And we’ll tackle that next crucial step in an upcoming College Made Simple.
