Why Your SAT Prep Course Could Be Ripping You Off…

If you’re the parent of a student preparing to take the SAT in the coming months or years, this could be the most important education report you will ever read.

You see, a dirty little secret… one held close to the vest by the college test prep industry… is costing unsuspecting families hundreds–even thousands–of dollars of their hard-earned money. This “sneaky” tactic routinely ropes parents into forking over additional cash for overcharged class time—helping to propel these SAT prep companies to record profits!

Fact is, more than 100 SAT prep companies operate in today’s market, with the majority offering some type of classroom-style course.  In a typical classroom environment, there’s a designated teacher and a set number of hours of class time.

But this is where it gets tricky…

The prep test companies have figured out two things.  One is to cram as many kids into one class as possible.  This drives up profits since they still only have to pay for one teacher.  Secondly, they include massive amounts of what’s called “filler.”  “Filler” in this case means charging 5-7 hours of class time per section when it really only takes 3 hours to effectively teach each section of material.  Parents are misled into believing that a large number of hours of classroom time equal better preparedness.  And yet, the reality is… long classroom time has never proven to increase test scores!

How to Spot a Truly Great SAT Prep Course

A good SAT prep course should be measured by a few very important benchmarks. The list below offers a firm starting point in identifying material worth using:

• Track record of how much students have improved after taking the course (This is the main benefit)
• Efficient time spent in the classroom.  No filler or wasted class time.
• Convenience.  Many courses now run obscurely timed class schedules that make it very difficult to make.  (Some classes won’t even give you a make-up class if you miss).  Some of the very best SAT prep courses are self-study, and require no class time whatsoever.
